Roadshow for the Phase 2 of the Population - Growth - Poverty Nexus Study

Code:    06-062
Date:    08/01/2006 - 11/30/2006

This project disseminated the findings of the study to the local government units; motivated local officials to develop policies, programs and projects that would address popdev issues; and gathered feedback to help in identifying the direction of future research studies and potential LGU projects that utilize the recommendations.

To disseminate the findings of the Phase 2 study to local executives, PCPD and APPC organized a roadshow in Naga City, Iloilo City, and Zamboanga City.  These were chosen as strategic locations where the young dependency ratio was found by the study to be high. Organizations with extensive experience in conducting symposia agreed to act as local collaborators, namely the Ateneo Social Science Reserach Center in Naga, the Central Philippine University-Social Science Research Institute in Iloilo, and the Zamboanga Disaster Relief Foundation in Zamboanga.

The symposia presented a regional perspective and were very well-attended by LGU officials, NGOs and the academe, with the Iloilo symposium being the best attended with close to 100 participants.  Feedback received from the participants showed how the study was much appreciated as an "eye opener" to stark realities.

Several potential projects that would utilize the study recommendations were identified.  The wide range of projects included: (1) embarking on massive information and educational campaigns, (2) organizing local population councils in the barangays, (3) implementing programs and policies to increase per capita income and increase government revenues for distribution, and (4) networking with government agencies, NGOs, the academe and the business community to sustain population management programs.
