Kabataan News Network (KNN): Youth Stories on PopDev

Code:    08-082
Date:    12/01/2008 - 08/31/2009

The project aims to harness the Kabataan News Network (KNN) as a powerful mass media channel and role model to carry the voices of young Filipinos to a wider audience. It will promote responsible behavior and awareness of population and development (PopDev) issues.

By the end of the project, the following should have been accomplished: (1) Thirty KNN reporters have gained knowledge on PopDev issues and are able to produce segments on the topic; (2) At least 500 in-school and out-of-school youth from Baguio, Camarines Norte, Manila, Capiz, Cebu, Dumaguete, Sarangani Province, Davao, North Cotabato, Cotabato City and Mindoro (at least 50/area) shall be aware of the issue and their role in PopDev through the videos created by the KNN reporters; (3) Six short video segments on popdev as a result of a 3-day regional workshop of KNN bureaus from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao; (4) At least 10 short segments of 2-5 minutes on PopDev in the areas where the bureaus are located, (5) One documentary of 12-15 minutes combining all segments created by KNN; (5) Exhibition and audience discussion of film/segments in at least one campus and/or community in each of the ten areas where KNN operates, with at least 50 viewers per area; (6) Creation of an innovative feedback and promotion mechanism on the materials for at least 500 respondents (in-school and out-of-school youth); and (7) Upload/airing of all materials produced under this project on KNN website under a “PopDev” theme.

The youth is among the primary target groups of PCPD.  Through this PMFI project, PCPD can contribute in increasing the youth’s knowledge of PopDev and awareness on their crucial role in population management. It should lead them to make significant decisions/actions affecting the country’s development. Once population becomes a regular beat of the KNN bureaus, population issues will be regularly covered and shared by young leaders and media aspirants with a wider audience.  This supports the goal of PCPD of creating better understanding of PopDev for population management.
