Communications Program on Effective Population Management and Sustainable Development

Code:    03-025
Date:    04/01/2003 - 12/31/2003

This project aimed to pilot a communication program on population issues among the business community. This partnership with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) hoped to: increase the business sector's awareness and understanding of population issues; expand their role in addressing the population problem; and enjoy the benefits of implementing effective population programs in the workplace.

The pilot phase focused on the conduct of five workshops (two area planning workshops and three chamber management workshops) in key areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

This advocacy specifically involved the: (1) Creation of population committees at the national and local chamber levels and identification/mobilization of focal persons in project project implementation; (2) A session on population during the two area planning workshops and three chamber management workshops; inclusion of population in the work programs of the two area planning workshops and consultations on project initiatives at the three local chambers level; (3) Development and distribution of collateral materials (population management, best practices in family planning in industry, etc.) to members; and (4) Conduct of media briefings after the workshops.

"Population and Sustainable Development" sessions were integrated in the following workshops: area planning workshops for Northern Luzon, NCR, Southern Luzon, Visayas and MIndanao; and the chamber management workshop in Northern Luzon (Dagupan City).

Results of the first phase were encouraging from the standpoint of raising levels of awareness on population and development among the business community; laying the ground for action-oriented programs in the future, and making popdev a continuing advocacy for PCCI.¨The PCPD EXCOM approved the release of funds for 14 other chamber management workshops.
