A Visioning Workshop for the Metro Davao Area

Code:    01-012
Date:    10/01/2001 - 01/31/2002

This activity was a follow through of the Metro Davao Extension Project, which aimed to promote a concerted response to the problems and issues on basic services that extend beyond geographical and political boundaries. The response to the problems can only be defined if there was a shared development vision of the 4 areas. This was what the workshop endeavored to achieve: to articulate a common vision as a basis for future action.

Another point for advocacy through this visioning workshop was to create a better appreciation of the population factor as inherent to the analysis and solution of development problems.

UP Mindanao, which has accorded much of the research and technical expertise for the Metro Davao Project, served as the convener for this workshop. The workshop was held March 8-9, 2002 at Eden Resort, Davao City.

Participants were able to agree on a vision for the 4 contiguous areas ( Panabo, Sta. Cruz, Davao City, Samal Island ). They would like the Metro Davao area to be an economic gateway to Southern Mindanao, an investment area, an attractive tourism center, a trading hub and a food basket. The participants also identified problems, which must be addressed to realize their vision for Metro Davao. These are: solid waste management, water pollution of the Davao Gulf, increasing cost of inter-locality transport, and the image problem related to peace and order.

A resolution for the creation of a council of local development planners of the 4 LGU's was passed to give the legal mandate to pursue cooperative work towards the vision for Metro Davao.
