Population Development Education Simulation Game
Date: 09/15/2008 - 07/15/2009
The project aims to educate the public, especially the youth (12-29 years old) about the effects of population growth on the development of the country and well being of Filipinos using a web-based simulation game. Unlike other simulation games, the Population Development Education Simulation (PopDev Ed) game will focus heavily on the correlation between population growth and income, and other important factors affecting population and development.
PopEd simulation software is the main product of the project. This is a web-based, multi-player online game; but at PCPD's option, it can also be distributed offline and played in a CD-ROM format. These are the main outputs of the project: (1) complete game design document that describes all functions of the game, (2) high quality and bug-free game software, pre-tested to target users, licensed and launched in the website, (3) a marketing plan to create awareness of the game towards its target users and a PR execution report, (4) an administration software to monitor the game players and create reports of demographic information; and (5) success tracking report for at least 6 months after launching the game online.
Contribution of the project to the goal of PCPD:
PCPD supports the development of multi-media materials and use of modern technology that will help create awareness and better understanding of popdev issues. Through games, the players will make real the consequences of decisions on the size of the population on available infrastructure.
Online gaming being a popular medium for reaching a wide audience of about 6 million gamers will help PCPD advance its strategic thrust of broadening popdev constituency.
The population education game is most likely to be a trailblaizer initiative and a model product for popularizing PopDev, especially among the youth who are attuned to new media. It has the potential of reaching both in-school and out-of-school young people.
